The D&S Railroad would hire a lookout to ensure the tracks were clear for their assigned train. On a regular day, an early morning lookout patrolman would go up on a motorcar from Durango® To Silverton. He did a full track inspection and made sure there were no rocks or trees on the tracks. Lookout patrolmen were out rain or shine every morning, afternoon, and evening ensuring the safety of passing trains.
